Mea Culpa

Terrance Simien has gained the ire of myself and a number of other dancers by playing really fast songs, going off on tangents, and generally being 'dancer unfriendly'. Thus the 'If you can stand Terrance's antics' comment ended up on Fools Night Out.

I showed up at Lewies last week more to support Zydeco at that venue than to see Mr. Simien. But I ended up seeing a really good show. Terrance's songs were danceable. The band sounded good. Terrances voice is undeniably good and didn't tend toward the ostentatious 'I can sing like Aaron Neville' that I've seen in the past.

There were a couple instances that recalled Simiens past... like the 3 minute buildup/intro to a song. And some complained of the drum & bass solos during the encore, but I can't get too worked up when the rhythm section gets a chance to be up front. They're so often just part of the background.

For those of us who had written off Terrance Simien, this was a change. I can't say if Terrance has changed his act, is a better judge of his audience, or we just got lucky. But I, for one, will give the man another chance when he comes back to town.
